I had heard a lot about Velankanni Church Chennai and had made up my mind to visit the church if I ever visited Chennai. Now that I am here, I was eager to go to Velankanni. I had the opportunity to visit the church on the third day of my stay at Chennai. On asking at the travel desk in the hotel, I was told that there were buses from Chennai to Velankanni. So I got up in the morning, had my breakfast and set off to Velankanni. I reached the church within half an hour and was spellbound with its beauty.
The church is located on the shores of Bay of Bengal and built in the Gothic style. It is believed to be built about 600 years ago. As I reached the church I saw that the entrance had two towers
with a cross on each tower. Before entering the church, I bought candles and once inside, I burnt the candles and placed them near the other burning candles. The interior of the church was
beautifully decorated and contained paintings showing the life story of Jesus Christ.
On the altar was located the statue of Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. On top of the statue I could see the picture of Jesus. I kneeled in front of the altar and prayed peacefully. I saw that many of the devotees bought small wax models of body parts that they wanted to heal, and this they gave to the priest. He took the body parts and delivered a prayer to Virgin Mary. It is believed that this will cure your of ailment soon.
Another thing that I saw here were the wish bags. These are small bags that you tie with yellow thread and hang at a particular place in the church, making a wish. Once your wish is fulfilled, you have to come back and take off the bag. After praying at the church I came out and visited other places. The beach had many shops selling various items like candles, wax models, pictures of Virgin Mary and baby Jesus and so on. The visit to Velankanni Church Chennai was a memorable one, which rejuvenated the mind and body.
