After spending about 2 hours at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park we came out at 10.30 and had some snacks and tea at the nearest restaurant. From there we went to Bandra, where the famous church, Mount Mary Church Mumbai was located. It is one of the favorite destinations for the religious people as well as the tourists. Being an IT professional and leading a busy life, I hardly get any time to visit churches and temples. So I took this opportunity to spend some time at the church and get the blessings of Mother Mary.
It took us a couple of hours by car to get to the church. It is built on top of a small hill, about 80 meters from sea level. Dedicated to Blessed Virgin Mary, it belongs to the Roman Catholics and is visited by people of all faiths. As I reached the church I was amazed by the ancient beauty of the church, overlooking the Arabian Sea. The architecture of the church reflected British style and the very sight of the church fills you with a sense of calm. Inside the church I saw the statue of ‘Our Lady’ belonging to the 16 century. The statue looked very beautiful and calm and the quietness of the place was amazing. It is said that if you pray here sincerely all your ailments will be cured.
The Bandra Fair or the Feast of Mother Mary held at Mount Mary Church Mumbai every September is the ideal time to visit the church, when it is in its full glory. The whole place is lighted up and decorated, with many vendors selling wax statues of Mother Mary and other articles, especially wax figures of hands, legs and other parts of the body.
People who are sick buy these body parts made in wax and light it at the church hoping to get relief from their ailments. After praying at the church and taking a round of the church we went back to the hotel at about 4.30 pm, ready to pack my bags and leave for Bangalore the next day.
